With a career that began humbly as a server at Soneva Fushi, Ali Ismail (Ali) has steadily risen through the ranks to become a respected leader as restaurant manager in the Maldivian hospitality industry. From earning guest excellence awards to managing top resort restaurants, his story is one of perseverance, passion, and purpose — and a testament to what’s possible with dedication and heart in the world of resort hospitality.

1. Tell us about your journey, how did you get started in the hospitality industry?

My journey in the hospitality industry began at Soneva Fushi, where I started as a restaurant server. This initial role allowed me to gain hands-on experience and understand the intricacies of guest service. After that , where I was elected as council president, I realized the importance of continuous learning in building a successful career. This led me back to hospitality, and I joined Finolhu Maldives as a server.

To further enhance my skills, I completed courses in food and beverage management and WSET Level Shortly after, I took on the role of restaurant supervisor at Dhigufaru Island, and within a few months, I was promoted to restaurant manager. Over the next seven years, I had the opportunity to work in various resorts under Universal Resorts, which enriched my experience significantly.

Most recently, I joined Taj Exotica Maldives, and I am currently involved in an exciting project with the pre-opening of Villa Haven. Throughout my career, I have always believed that dedication to learning and a strong work ethic are essential for growth in this industry.

2. What inspired you to pursue a career in restaurant management, especially in a resort setting?

What inspired me to pursue a career in restaurant management, particularly in a resort setting, is my passion for creating memorable dining experiences for guests. From my early days as a server, I realized that the hospitality industry is not just about food and service; it’s about crafting moments that guests will cherish long after their visit. Working in a resort environment is particularly rewarding because it allows me to interact with a diverse range of guests from all over the world. This diversity brings unique challenges and opportunities to learn and grow. I am inspired by the idea of creating a welcoming atmosphere where guests feel valued and cared for, whether they are celebrating a special occasion or simply enjoying a meal. Additionally, the dynamic nature of resort management excites me. Every day presents new challenges, from managing a team to ensuring that every aspect of the dining experience is exceptional. I find great fulfillment in leading a team, mentoring staff, and fostering a culture of excellence. Ultimately, my goal is to not only meet but exceed guest expectations, contributing to their overall enjoyment of the resort and leaving a lasting impression.

3. As a Maldivian, what does it mean to you to represent your country in the tourism and hospitality sector?

As a Maldivian, representing my country in the tourism and hospitality sector is a profound honor and responsibility. The Maldives is renowned for its stunning natural beauty, rich culture, and warm hospitality, and I take great pride in showcasing these attributes to our guests. Being in this role allows me to share the unique Maldivian experience, from our traditional cuisine to our customs and values. I believe that every interaction with guests is an opportunity to promote our culture and heritage, fostering a deeper appreciation for our islands. Moreover, working in this sector means contributing to the economic development of our nation and supporting local communities. I am passionate about creating sustainable practices that not only enhance the guest experience but also protect our environment and empower our people. Ultimately, representing the Maldives in tourism and hospitality is about creating lasting connections and memories for our visitors while honoring and preserving the beauty of our homeland.

4. Were there any key moments or people in your life who influenced your career path?

Absolutely, there have been several key moments and influential people who have shaped my career path in restaurant management. One significant influence was Mr. Randy, the director at Dhigali, whose vision for guest experience and operational efficiency taught me the importance of innovation in hospitality. His mentorship helped me understand how to create memorable dining experiences that go beyond just serving food.

Additionally, I am grateful for the support and insights from Mr. Hamza, the director of Food and Beverage at Villa Haven. His expertise in the industry has been instrumental in shaping my approach to restaurant management, particularly in understanding the nuances of managing a successful food and beverage operation. These experiences and the mentorship from these remarkable individuals have been invaluable in guiding my career and fueling my passion for the hospitality sector.

5. Most challenging part of your role, and how did you overcome it?

One of the most challenging parts of my role as a restaurant manager is the limited opportunities for Maldivians to build a career in the hospitality sector. This can be discouraging, especially when I see so much potential among my fellow countrymen and women. However, I have adopted a career-building mindset, focusing on creating pathways for growth and development within my team.

To overcome this challenge, I prioritize mentorship and training for aspiring hospitality professionals. I actively seek ways to provide them with the skills and knowledge needed to excel in this industry. By fostering a supportive environment and encouraging continuous learning, I aim to inspire others to pursue their passion for hospitality. I believe that with dedication and the right opportunities, we can create a stronger presence of Maldivians in the hospitality field, ultimately benefiting our local communities and the industry as a whole.

6. Proud moment or achievement that stands out in your career so far?

One proud moment in my career that stands out is receiving multiple guest feedback awards at Soneva Fushi. These accolades reflect my commitment to delivering exceptional service and ensuring guest satisfaction.

Moreover, I’ve consistently received the Guest Comments Award and have been named Manager of the Month several times, which highlights my focus on creating memorable experiences for our guests. A particularly proud moment was being nominated for Manager of the Year, as it not only recognized my efforts but also inspired me to continue striving for excellence in my role. Each of these achievements motivates me to push the boundaries of what we can accomplish in hospitality.

7. How do you handle peak seasons when the resort is at full capacity?

Handling peak seasons when the resort is at full capacity requires careful planning and effective team management. First, I ensure that we have adequate staffing levels to meet the increased demand. This involves training and preparing my team in advance so they are ready to handle the busy periods efficiently.

I also focus on streamlining our operations, from food preparation to service delivery, to minimize wait times and enhance the guest experience. Communication is key during these times, so I maintain open channels with my team to quickly address any issues that arise.

Additionally, I prioritize guest engagement, making sure that our staff is attentive and proactive in meeting guests’ needs. By fostering a positive and energetic work environment, we can maintain high service standards even during the busiest times, ensuring that our guests have a memorable experience at the resort.

8. What advice would you give to young Maldivians who are considering a career in hospitality?

My advice to young Maldivians considering a career in hospitality is to cultivate a “can-do” attitude. This mindset is essential in our industry, as it allows you to tackle challenges with enthusiasm and a positive outlook. Being adaptable and willing to learn will set you apart from others.

Additionally, punctuality is crucial. Arriving on time for your duties shows professionalism and respect for your colleagues and guests. It reflects your commitment to your role and helps maintain a smooth operation, especially during busy periods. Embrace these qualities, and you’ll find that a career in hospitality can be incredibly rewarding and full of opportunities for growth.

9. Where do you see yourself in the next five years within the industry?

In the next five years, I see myself advancing to a higher title within the food and beverage department. I aim to take on more leadership responsibilities, where I can contribute to strategic decision-making and drive initiatives that enhance guest experiences and operational efficiency. I believe that with my experience and dedication, I can play a key role in shaping the future of our offerings and leading a talented team to achieve our goals.

The hospitality industry in the Maldives has undergone very big changes and developed a lot since I first started working. When I began my career, the focus was primarily on providing basic services, but now the industry emphasizes luxury, unique experiences, and sustainability.

There has been significant investment in infrastructure and training, leading to higher standards of service and a broader range of offerings for guests. The rise of boutique resorts and eco-friendly practices has also transformed how we approach hospitality, catering to the evolving preferences of travelers. Overall, the growth and innovation in the Maldives’ hospitality sector have been remarkable, making it a leader in the global tourism market.
