Last week, Ahmed Fazil, National Consultant at UNDRR and Managing Director of Fizal Environmental Consultancy, had the privilege of attending the Asia-Pacific Ministerial Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR). This significant event brought together experts, policymakers, and advocates from across the region to engage in critical discussions about disaster preparedness and climate action.
As a panelist in the session titled “Children and Youth for DRR and Climate Action,” Fazil explored the vital role that young people play in shaping responses to environmental challenges. He emphasized that the insights and energy of youth are essential, as they will be the ones most affected by the decisions made today.
Throughout the conference, Fazil participated in several thematic sessions covering a broad range of topics, from climate finance to innovative technologies. He was particularly impressed by the discussions on remote sensing for vulnerability mapping, noting the potential of drone mapping to enhance hazard assessments and improve disaster preparedness.
Reflecting on his experience, Fazil expressed gratitude for the opportunity to contribute to such an important dialogue. The exchange of ideas and strategies was invaluable, and he is motivated to continue engaging in the discourse on disaster risk reduction and climate action, both at home and beyond.
As the conference concluded, Fazil highlighted the importance of sustaining momentum, leveraging innovative technologies, and amplifying the voices of youth in the ongoing fight against climate-related challenges. Together, he believes, we can work towards building a more resilient future for all.
