Ali Ismail Reflects on Leadership During Pre-Opening Challenges

Ali Ismail, a seasoned hospitality professional with over 23 years of experience, has once again found himself at the forefront of a critical phase in resort operations — the pre-opening stage.

Currently serving as the Restaurant Manager at Villa Haven, Ali shares his thoughts on the complexities of launching a hospitality outlet from the ground up. Having previously contributed to successful openings at Ifuru Island and Dhigufaru, he brings both seasoned insight and calm leadership to the task.

“Pre-opening is never easy,” Ali begins. “It’s a high-pressure environment. Every department is setting up their operations, teams are new, and expectations are already sky-high.”

Facing the Reality Behind the Glamour
While resort launches are often showcased with glamour, Ali emphasizes that the groundwork is demanding — especially in food and beverage operations.

“There’s no existing rhythm — everything needs to be created. SOPs, inventory systems, staff training, even floor plans for service flow. It’s about being proactive and precise,” he says.

Among the challenges he highlighted:

Logistical Delays: Deliveries of cutlery, equipment, and even uniforms may be late or mismatched.

Team Readiness: Many team members are fresh recruits who need rapid onboarding and coaching under pressure.

Unstable Communication Flow: Departments are still forming habits of coordination — misunderstandings can delay service readiness.

Last-Minute Changes: From construction delays to sudden VIP visits, adaptability becomes the most vital skill.

Despite these hurdles, Ali’s calm and composed leadership approach turns these difficulties into team-building moments.

Q&A With Ali Ismail

Q: What’s the biggest difference between running an existing restaurant and launching a new one?
Ali: “In an existing operation, you manage what’s already been built. In pre-opening, you’re the architect — not just physically but culturally. You’re shaping values, pace, habits, and mindsets.”

Q: How do you keep your team motivated during such intense phases?
Ali: “By being present. I don’t manage from the office. I walk the floor, train by doing, listen actively, and recognize effort. Small encouragements go a long way.”

Q: What advice would you give to someone stepping into their first pre-opening role?
Ali: “Take nothing for granted. Ask questions, confirm details, and be ready to solve problems creatively. And always protect team morale — it’s your greatest asset.”

A Leader Focused on Growth
Ali believes that pre-opening phases are more than operational tests — they’re opportunities for professional growth.

“Every challenge teaches you something — patience, planning, flexibility. Pre-openings are like fire — they shape the steel.”

He concludes with one of his core beliefs:

“Hospitality starts with respect — for guests, for colleagues, and for the details.”
