Ihuru Baazaar: UNDP Maldives Champions Sustainable Agriculture and Local Empowerment in Thoddoo

The grand opening of the Ihuru Baazaar in AA. Thoddoo marks a significant milestone in promoting sustainable agricultural practices in the Maldives. Spearheaded by the Business Center Corporation in collaboration with the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade, the initiative is not just a marketplace but a vital support for the local farming community. Made possible through the backing of the Government of Japan and UNDP Maldives under the Project for Developing Sustainable Agricultural Economy (PDSAE), Ihuru Baazaar aims to strengthen and diversify the agricultural sector, endorsing the “Farm to Plate” ethos that celebrates local, fresh produce while minimizing environmental impact.

This vibrant farmers’ market reflects a larger commitment to sustainable agriculture that balances environmental health with economic viability and social equity. By bringing locally sourced products directly to consumers, Ihuru Baazaar reinforces the importance of agricultural self-sufficiency, reducing dependency on imported produce while boosting local farmers’ income. It also embodies the principles of ecological resilience, as it encourages farming practices that protect and sustain natural resources, thereby safeguarding future agricultural productivity and reinforcing community resilience against external economic pressures.

Through this project, the Government of Japan and UNDP Maldives are helping foster a thriving agricultural economy in the region, creating pathways for sustainable livelihoods. The Ihuru Baazaar is more than a market; it represents a movement toward food security and environmental stewardship in the Maldives. By enhancing the visibility and market reach of local farmers, the project encourages Maldivians to embrace locally grown food, promoting a circular economy where economic and environmental benefits can grow in harmony.
