Ibrahim Shiyam, the Minister of State for Transport and Civil Aviation, had the privilege of participating in the APRSO Annual Meeting 2024 in Tokyo, where he delivered a presentation titled “Climate Change Risks to Transport and Links to Road Safety in the Maldives.” His presentation highlighted how rising sea levels and extreme weather events are impacting transport safety in the Maldives and explored strategies for building climate-resilient mobility systems.
In addition to engaging in panel discussions and interactive sessions, the study tour provided invaluable learning opportunities. Minister Shiyam gained insights from Japan’s experience in promoting safer roads, explored best practices in sustainable mobility, and observed how innovative urban planning supports safe and livable cities.
The visit to the Honda Crash Test Facility provided him with a firsthand look at cutting-edge vehicle safety research, while the session at ITARDA deepened his understanding of road crash data management. His exploration of the transformative urban planning in Utsunomiya, including the newly launched Light Rail Transit (LRT) system, demonstrated how integrated transport solutions enhance urban mobility.
Minister Shiyam emphasized that this experience reaffirmed the importance of global collaboration in advancing sustainable and safe transport solutions. He expressed his gratitude to the APRSO organizers, the ADB Institute, and all participants for the opportunity to exchange ideas and best practices.
