“Gen Z Rejects 9-to-5 Jobs, with 76% Aiming for Entrepreneurship”: Poll

A recent poll reveals that 76% of Generation Z prefer entrepreneurship over traditional 9-to-5 jobs, significantly outpacing millennials, with only 57% expressing the same interest. Gen Z, confident in their digital skills, is emerging as a more entrepreneurial generation, favoring self-employment over working for others. The survey, conducted by Santander UK, found that three-quarters of Gen Z aim to “be their own boss,” with 77% confident in their ability to run a successful business, and 39% believing they could manage it entirely from their smartphone.

Half of the respondents believe that Gen Z and millennials have an advantage in launching businesses due to their upbringing in the digital age. By contrast, only 34% of Gen X and Boomers felt that they had similar opportunities when they were younger, as they faced greater pressure to pursue traditional educational and career paths.

“Gen Z is proving to be the most entrepreneurial generation yet, and it’s no coincidence. Unlike previous generations, they’ve grown up fully immersed in the digital age, where information, tools, and global connections are just a click away,” said Sam Jones, founder of Gener8 and a star of Dragon’s Den. “This constant exposure has fostered a mindset that values innovation and agility. They’re not just prepared to start their own ventures—they’re uniquely positioned to outpace previous generations in turning ideas into reality.”

Mike Regnier, CEO of Santander UK, added, “While Gen Z’s entrepreneurial spirit is impressive, age is not a barrier to success. Entrepreneurship is driven by passion, curiosity, and the desire to create something meaningful—qualities that can be developed at any age.”

Santander’s poll, which surveyed 2,000 adults, highlights that Gen Z and millennials are perceived as the most entrepreneurial, but it also underscores that successful entrepreneurship is not confined by age. This year, Santander saw more than 850 businesses apply for their awards, with Gen Z making up two-thirds of the applicants. These businesses span industries such as healthcare, sustainability, AI, and technology.
