A Journey Through Hospitality with Ibrahim Zameel Ahmed: Rising from Adversity

In his late teens to early twenties, Zameel cultivated a passion for diving and a deep interest in the Maldivian hospitality industry. However, a health issue forced him to relinquish diving and pursue higher studies in Malaysia. Upon his return in 2012, he embarked on his hospitality journey with Jumeirah Vittaveli, initially joining their F&B department’s IVD, where he gained two years of invaluable experience. Driven by a desire to diversify his skills, he transitioned to the Front Office, starting as a bell attendant, and later expanding his expertise through cross-training in airport operations.

In 2018, an opportunity arose to join the airport team of Cocoon Maldives, marking a pivotal moment in Zameel’s career trajectory. Presently, he serves as an Airport Team Leader for The Ozen Collection, overseeing the operations of Ozen Reserve Bolifushi and Ozen Life Maadhoo. Reflecting on the past 11 years, his resort experience journey has been characterized by continuous learning, personal growth, meaningful connections, and a deeply fulfilling career.

The Significance of Starting from the Ground up

Zameel firmly believes that beginning one’s career from the grassroots level is immensely beneficial and humbling, regardless of the industry. It offers a unique opportunity to understand business operations, build a robust network, and accumulate invaluable experience. From this foundation, there is only one direction to move – onward and upward. Progressing along this growth trajectory fosters heightened awareness of various situations and cultivates empathy towards colleagues and clients. Starting at the grassroots also ignites a fervent passion to ascend the career ladder, making a significant difference in one’s professional journey.

Overcoming Challenges and Embracing Growth

Throughout his journey, Zameel encountered significant challenges, including the emotional toll of separating from his family while based at the resort. The birth of his son prematurely exacerbated this situation, as he struggled to allocate sufficient time to his family amidst frequent travel between the resort and Male’. Additionally, his decision to transition from F&B to the Front Office came with sacrifices, impacting his job level, basic pay, and other allowances. Despite these challenges, his unwavering resilience and commitment to personal and professional growth propelled him forward.

Advice for Aspiring Professionals

Zameel’s advice to aspiring professionals is to maintain a clear vision, cultivate flexibility, and prioritize continuous learning. Embrace resilience and patience, recognizing that the journey towards career fulfillment is a marathon, not a sprint. With dedication and perseverance, success is not just a destination but a continuous evolution of growth and achievement.
