Aishath Shareef – An 8 Year Journey Inspiring And Promoting L&D

For the past 8 years, I have been actively engaged in the field of Learning & Development. My journey began at the Civil Service Training Institute (CSTI), where I joined as an Assistant Training Coordinator. Over time, I progressed to the roles of Training Coordinator and eventually Senior Training Coordinator until the year 2022. Working at CSTI was an illuminating experience as it involved providing training to more than 26,000 employees of the Maldives Civil Service. Collaborating with an exceptional team further enriched my professional growth.

Presently, I hold the position of an L&D Specialist at Maldives Ports Limited. In addition to my full-time role, I also contribute as a part-time lecturer. Furthermore, I find great enjoyment in engaging as an event host or Master of Ceremonies.

Initially, my responsibilities encompassed designing and facilitating training programs focused on Economic Analysis and Financial Management. However, I was fortunate enough to be entrusted with managing HRM and HRD related training programs, which sparked my interest in the broader spectrum of Human Resources. Among various aspects of HR, I found myself particularly passionate about talent development, recognizing its immense impact in this vast field.

In my perspective, the present state of the HR field in Maldives appears to hold immense potential. A significant proportion of our workforce demonstrates remarkable skills and expertise, indicating that the issue we face is not an insufficient supply of talented individuals. Our attention should be directed towards enhancing the potential of the existing talent within our organizations, making human capital development a vital aspect. It is noteworthy to mention that an increasing number of organizations in Maldives is recognizing this necessity and is investing in the growth of their workforce’s abilities.

However, I believe there is still scope for more improvement. Numerous establishments recognize the significance of investing in their workforce’s skills and knowledge in order to keep up with changes in the industry, advancements in technology, and evolving job responsibilities. I believe that we should diversify our strategies for learning and development in order to consistently impact our employees and organizations in the long term. Instead of isolated events, learning and development activities should be integrated into the fabric of the organization’s culture. Promoting self-development, facilitating social learning, and creating opportunities for coaching and mentoring are just a few techniques, in addition to the formal and informal training, that we can implement in our organizations to foster a culture of continuous learning.

For anyone with similar aspirations as me, I suggest taking full advantage of the opportunities that come your way. Be open to exploring new things that can enhance your knowledge and understanding, as every new experience holds value. As a professional in the field of Learning & Development, our role is not solely to impart knowledge, but also to foster personal growth and transformation. Thus, the more dedicated we are to learning and growing ourselves, the better equipped we are to inspire others to do the same.
