This ingenious haven has already received two major renowned awards from the Maldives Tourism Awards 2023 – one for having the largest number of Maldivian workers in a tourist resort and the other for promoting local visual artists.
In our recent conversation with Aminath Shaly, the Human Resources Director of Oaga Art Resort, we discovered the key to the workforce being comprised of over 73% Maldivian workers. According to Shaly, their unique approach to recruitment plays a significant role in achieving this. Unlike traditional methods, they do not solely seek out the perfect candidate for vacant positions below the supervisor level. Instead, they focus on hiring individuals who possess interest and potential for the position, allowing them to mold them into the perfect candidate.
According to her, in order to assess this potential, they request candidates to submit a video showcasing their additional talents during the recruitment process. This innovative tactic enables their resort to extract the maximum potential from each employee. Shaly emphasized that they not only prioritize work-related skills but also seek out additional talents such as DJing, which they will later actively support and nurture. The primary motivation behind this recruitment strategy is its long-term cost reduction benefits. By investing in the development of their employees’ additional talents, Oaga Art Resort aims to harness their full potential and avoid the need for costly external hires. Through this distinctive recruitment strategy, Oaga Art Resort have cultivated a workforce that predominantly consists of talented Maldivian individuals.
