VISIONING MALDIVES: LEADERSHIP DIALOGUES – THIRD SESSION ON FOSTERING INNOVATION IN PUBLIC SERVICE DELIVERY

The President’s Office of the Maldives, together with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in the Maldives hosted the third session of ‘Visioning Maldives: Leadership Dialogues’ as part of the Executives Enhancement and Enrichment Program (EEEP) 2021-2023 by the Maldives Civil Service Training Institute under the Civil Service Commission.

‘Visioning Maldives: Leadership Dialogues’ aims to expose leaders to the latest trends in public administration, development policy and innovation. Each session will bring together global experts and top political officials to solicit exchange and knowledge sharing on 21st century leadership to inspire and support the Government of Maldives in leapfrogging into a ‘future proof’ development nation.

The third session of the ‘Visioning Maldives’ dialogues was held virtually, with the theme ‘Fostering Innovation in Public Service Delivery,’ focusing on responding to the needs of citizens in efficient and innovative ways. It also focused on how to foster collaborative innovation in these times of austerity, leverage the enablers and apt measures to tackle the challenges and increasing uncertainties and complexities of the 21st century. The policy dialogue highlighted successful and novel approaches and models to public sector innovation, with expertise from UNDP and experience sharing from world-leading policy institutes to foreground the importance of building an agile, adaptable, and responsive public service. 

Prosecutor General, Uz. Hussain Shameem delivered the opening remarks of the session. Moderated by Enrico Gaveglia, UNDP Resident Representative in the Maldives, the speakers for the session included Milica Begovic a global adviser at UNDP’s Strategic Innovation Unit, Laurie Laybourn-Langton, a Visiting Fellow at Chatham House, who also leads the Cohort 2040 project, and Rex R. Lor, the Head of Solutions Mapping of the United Nations Development Program Philippines Accelerator Lab. The expert panelists weighed in on innovative and novel initiatives by the public sector in the move towards transforming the service delivery to create just and resilient plans and frameworks that effectively utilizes limited resources, to create a sustainable future for future generations.

The first session of the ‘Visioning Maldives: Leadership Dialogues’ was held on 23 March 2022 on ‘Leading through Uncertainty: Strategic Foresight.’ The session saw the participation of over 300 top government officials.
